Types of Wave – Physics
For: Science Class : 12

On the basis of necessity of medium, wave are categorized on following types:

A. Mechanical Wave
Those wave originated in an elastic materials are called mechanical waves. This wave requires material medium for propagation. For example: Sound wave, Water wave, Wave’s in Organpipe.

B. Electromagnetic Wave
That wave which doesn’t require any material for propagation is known as electromagnetic wave, for example: Microwave, Radio wave, Light wave.

On the basis of vibration of particles there are two waves

A. Transverse Wave
If in a wave motion, the particles of the medium vibrate about their mean position, perpendicular to propagation of wave, such wave is called transverse wave. For example: Water wave, Transverse Vibration in string.

All the particles have same amplitude and frequency, the wave travels in the form of crest – trough. The distance between crest – crest and trough – trough is known as wave length of the wave.

B. Longitudinal Wave
If in a wave motion, the particles of the medium vibrate about their mean position in the direction of propagation of wave, such wave is called longitudinal wave, For example: Sound wave, Compressional wave in spring.

The longitudinal wave travels in the form of compression and Rarefaction.
