On August 7, 1959, the Explorer 6 satellite launched from the Atlantic Missile range in Cape Canaveral, Florida, the U.S. Spacecraft Explorer 6 was launched into an orbit around the earth with no human in it. Its mission was to study Earth’s electrical and magnetic fields in the upper atmosphere. It also carried a device for scanning and photographing cloud cover. The spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the earth’s surface and cloud cover from a distance of 17,000 miles.
