Third Intended Mission to Land on the Moon

Apollo 13 was Launched by Apollo Space Program

Any people who have the interest in the astronomy have heard of the famous mission and event of moon landing.  Apollo 11 was the first successful mission to land on the moon. The Apollo 11 was not the only mission launched with intention of landing on the moon.  Apollo 13 was also the mission launched with intention of landing on the moon.

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The mission to land on the moon was unsuccessful. It was aborted due to the explosion of the oxygen tank two days after the launch. It crippled the service module in which the command module was depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to make makeshift repairs to the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970, six days after launch.

The flight passed far side of the Moon at an altitude of 254 kilometers above the lunar surface, and 400,171 km from Earth. It marked the farthest distance human have travelled from the earth.  The mission was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module Pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module Pilot.
