Charles Darwin Presented Paper on Theory of Evolution to Linnean Society

Today July 1 is the 160th anniversary of the presentation of papers by Charles Darwin and Russel Wallace outlining the theory of evolution by natural selection at a meeting at the Linnean Society. The title of the presentation was “On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties: and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection” and was published on 1 July 1858. Darwin had been working on his theory since 1837, soon after his epic voyage on the HMS Beagle.
